ANZ has announced its participation in the Australian Government’s trial of the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS) for existing homes. This initiative aims to provide energy ratings that will help households understand their home's energy performance and identify potential upgrades to reduce energy bills and improve comfort.
Previously, NatHERS was available only for new dwellings. However, in 2023, it was decided that the scheme would be extended to existing homes starting mid-2025. The current trial is designed to gather insights for a smooth implementation.
ANZ is collaborating with the Australian Government, CSIRO, and property valuation firms Opteon & Herron Todd White for this trial. Selected ANZ customers applying to refinance or top up their mortgage will be invited to participate and will receive a free home energy rating trial certificate. This certificate will assist them in identifying where efficiencies and cost-savings can be achieved.
Shannon McMahon, ANZ Managing Director of Home Loans, stated: “We know that both energy and cost savings are top of mind for many of our customers, and so we’re thrilled to be part of this trial that will help more Australian households to make energy-efficient choices while also saving on their energy bills.” She added that the program aims to create sustainable and comfortable homes for Australians.
Anthony Wright from CSIRO expressed his satisfaction with ANZ joining the trials: “I am delighted that ANZ has joined the NatHERS trials for existing homes. CSIRO has been developing energy rating software for more than 40 years and we know that targeted home energy efficiency upgrades make financial sense. ANZ’s participation helps bring the benefits of home energy ratings to everyone, not just the new home builders.”
NatHERS has been providing energy performance ratings for new Australian homes for decades. The government is committed to expanding this scheme to include existing homes, ensuring reliable, consistent, and comparable ratings through ongoing trials.
