Ambassador Bryan D. Hunt addressed the attendees of the U.S. Embassy's inaugural EducationUSA College Fair in Sierra Leone, highlighting the significance of education as a tool for achieving opportunities and success. He emphasized that education is crucial for economic growth, security, and cultural understanding.
"The United States has long been committed to promoting education as a powerful tool for achieving greater opportunities and success," said Ambassador Hunt. He expressed pride in American educational institutions welcoming international students, including those from Sierra Leone.
The ambassador encouraged students to pursue higher education in high-growth industries such as technology, healthcare, manufacturing, and finance. He mentioned that studying in the U.S. offers not only academic knowledge but also cultural exchange opportunities.
"I have fond memories of open debate and dialogue with my international classmates when I was a student at the American University," he shared, underscoring the importance of cross-cultural understanding.
Ambassador Hunt urged prospective students to thoroughly research their options and apply to schools that fit them best rather than just prestigious names. He stressed the impact of students' choices on bilateral relations between Sierra Leone and the United States.
"Too many of your predecessors on this journey have elected to misuse the privilege that they have been granted to study in the United States," he noted, referring to visa overstays. The ambassador advised respecting immigration laws to maintain positive relationships between nations.
He concluded by encouraging students to return home after their studies to contribute positively to Sierra Leone's development. "Together, we can achieve great things," Ambassador Hunt stated while thanking participants for their involvement in making the college fair possible.
