Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May each year, serves as a national day of remembrance for those who died in service to the United States during both wartime and peacetime. This year, Memorial Day falls on May 26, 2025.

The day is marked by various commemorative activities across the country. Americans honor fallen soldiers by visiting cemeteries and memorials, hosting family gatherings, and attending parades. Major cities such as Chicago, New York City, and Washington D.C. host some of the largest parades.

Originally known as Decoration Day, this observance began with the tradition of placing flowers on soldiers' graves. The first national commemoration occurred at Arlington National Cemetery on May 30, 1868. By the early 20th century, it became widely known as Memorial Day. In 1971, federal law officially designated the last Monday in May as its date.

"The U.S. Embassy in Helsinki is closed on Monday, May 26," due to Memorial Day observance.
