World Bank Managing Director for Operations Anna Bjerde concluded her first visit to Bhutan, where she reinforced the World Bank Group's commitment to supporting the country's economic and development objectives.
During her meeting with King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, Bjerde praised Bhutan's progress in economic growth and poverty reduction. She highlighted the country's balance between modernity and heritage, stating, "Bhutan is renowned for its pristine beauty and unique development philosophy. It has also made impressive strides in human development and significantly reduced poverty through sustained economic growth."
Bjerde announced the launch of the World Bank Group’s new Country Partnership Framework for Bhutan, which will guide support over the next five years. This framework aligns with Bhutan’s 13th Five-Year Plan and results from consultations with local stakeholders. The strategy focuses on private sector-led job creation, especially targeting youth, women, and disadvantaged groups.
In addition to policy discussions, Bjerde visited a high school where she engaged with grade 12 students. The World Bank is involved in strengthening Bhutan's education system to better prepare students for employment opportunities.
Bjerde also met with Queen Mother Sangay Choden Wangchuck, along with various government officials, private sector leaders, civil society representatives, and women entrepreneurs to discuss priorities for Bhutan’s development. Martin Raiser, Vice President for the South Asia Region at the World Bank, accompanied her during these meetings.
