Ambassador Chung recently addressed attendees at the WEConnect Roadshow 2025: Power of Access event held in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The event brought together women business leaders from both Sri Lanka and the United States to celebrate their contributions to economic growth.
During his speech, Ambassador Chung praised the efforts of WEConnect International over the past three years. He noted that "over 500 women-owned businesses have gained the skills, connections, and confidence they need to compete and thrive" thanks to initiatives launched by WEConnect International.
The ambassador also acknowledged the role of the Ceylon Chamber of Women Entrepreneurs (CCWE) in providing essential training for women entrepreneurs. These sessions included topics such as investment readiness, business resilience, digital skills, branding, and export opportunities.
Ambassador Chung highlighted successful examples like Chamani Fashions & Embroidery and Liya Creations. He stated that these businesses are not only creating products but also "creating value" by connecting with global companies like Marriott and Accenture.
Reflecting on recent developments in U.S.-Sri Lankan trade relations, Ambassador Chung emphasized President Trump's commitment to fair trade practices while maintaining strong partnerships globally. "America First does not mean America alone," he remarked.
The ambassador underscored how small businesses led by women are transforming multinational supply chains across continents. He mentioned tech startups such as zMessenger and CodeGen which provide services enhancing efficiency for U.S. firms like Accenture.
Chung concluded by encouraging Sri Lanka's continued economic reforms aimed at reducing barriers for international partnerships. He affirmed America's support for these efforts saying, "Commerce and business can be the best diplomats."
The event celebrated strategic alliances grounded in mutual value between American firms and South Asian enterprises led by women entrepreneurs. Ambassador Chung encouraged perseverance despite challenges on their entrepreneurial journeys: "Your victory and successes will be even more sweet because you overcame these challenges along the way."
