The United States is observing Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month this May, as proclaimed by President Donald J. Trump. The proclamation acknowledges the significant contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to the nation's history and development.
President Trump highlighted the perseverance and dedication of individuals such as Lakshmi and Radhakrishna Chilukuri, who immigrated from India in the 1980s, focusing on higher education and instilling strong values in their children. Their daughter, Usha Chilukuri, currently serves as the Second Lady of the United States. Another notable figure mentioned is Tulsi Gabbard from American Samoa, who has served in the military and now holds the position of Director of National Intelligence.
The proclamation emphasizes that over 77,000 Asian American and Pacific Islanders are actively serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, contributing to national security. President Trump stated that their stories have helped build a stronger nation.
"Throughout our history, the United States has been strengthened by the contributions of citizens from every background," said President Trump. "As we recognize Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we celebrate the deep and enduring impact that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have had on our Nation."
He further encouraged all Americans to engage with programs and activities that highlight Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander heritage during this month.
"NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP... do hereby proclaim May 2025 as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month," declared President Trump.
This observance aligns with Public Law 102-450 which designates May each year as “Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month.”
