The USS Blue Ridge, the flagship of the U.S. 7th Fleet, has arrived in Wellington, New Zealand for a port visit on May 16, 2025. This marks the first time the ship has visited New Zealand and its capital city. Previous visits by U.S. Navy ships to Wellington include the USS Howard in 2021 and the USS Sampson in 2016.
During this visit, leaders from the U.S. 7th Fleet will meet with their counterparts from New Zealand to discuss ways to improve operational readiness and advance military capabilities. The visit aims to enhance the bilateral relationship between the United States and New Zealand.
Vice Admiral Fred Kacher, commander of the U.S. 7th Fleet, commented on the significance of this event: “This historic port visit by the USS Blue Ridge and our 7th Fleet team speaks to deep ties the United States and New Zealand share,” he said. “Our partnership is rooted in our common values and respect, and our visit here represents an important opportunity for us to further strengthen the bond between our nations and our navies.”
U.S. Navy Capt. Nicholas DeLeo welcomed Mr. David Gehrenbeck, Chargé d’affaires at the U.S. Embassy in New Zealand, along with Royal New Zealand Navy Capt. Quentin Randall during a ceremony marking Blue Ridge’s arrival.
Sailors from Blue Ridge are scheduled to participate in various activities including band performances, community events, ship tours, and sightseeing around Wellington as part of their visit.
The primary mission of U.S. 7th Fleet staff aboard USS Blue Ridge is providing operational control for forces in Western Pacific and Indian Oceans while promoting regional stability through engagements with allies.
David Gehrenbeck expressed his enthusiasm about this visit: “We’re delighted to welcome the USS Blue Ridge and her crew to Aotearoa New Zealand,” he said.“These visits underscore first-class working relationships between our defense forces.”
Public access to tour onboard will not be available during this stopover as it serves primarily for refueling purposes.
