The Tiwanaku archaeological complex in Bolivia is undergoing significant restoration efforts with support from the United States. The U.S. has invested $100,000 through the Department of State’s Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) to assist in preserving this ancient site. The project involves collaboration between experts from both countries to clean and preserve stone structures and create digital maps to elevate the site's global recognition. Restoration work commenced in 2023 and is expected to conclude by 2026.

During a visit to assess progress, Debra Hevia, Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Bolivia, remarked on the significance of this project: “This project reflects the enduring friendship between our peoples for over more than 175 years of diplomatic relations, and reaffirms our commitment to working alongside the Bolivian people to preserve their valuable cultural heritage.”

This initiative represents a continuation of U.S. involvement in preservation efforts at Tiwanaku; previously, over ten years ago, equipment was provided for archaeological laboratories and storage facilities at the site. Since its inception in 2001, AFCP has funded more than 25 cultural preservation projects across Bolivia with contributions approaching two million dollars.

Achievements under this initiative include restoring stone sculptures, developing digital maps of Tiwanaku, and creating a protocol manual for future preservation endeavors. These measures aim not only to protect Bolivia's cultural heritage but also promote sustainable tourism that offers educational benefits.

As part of this program, specialists from Utah Valley University visited Tiwanaku twice—in September 2024 and May 2025—to train Bolivian experts in techniques related to stone sculpture restoration and cleaning. This exchange enhanced local expertise while fostering mutual understanding between Bolivia and the United States.
