The United States has announced significant progress in trade negotiations with China, following discussions held in Geneva. The talks were led by Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer.

Secretary Bessent expressed optimism about the outcome, stating, “I’m happy to report that we made substantial progress between the United States and China in the very important trade talks.” He acknowledged the role of the Swiss government in hosting the meetings, which he believed contributed to their productivity. Bessent mentioned that details would be disclosed soon, highlighting that both he and Ambassador Jamieson had briefed President Trump on the developments.

Ambassador Greer described the two-day discussions as constructive and noted how quickly an agreement was reached. He said, “It’s important to understand how quickly we were able to come to agreement, which reflects that perhaps the differences were not so large as maybe thought.” Greer emphasized that resolving the United States' $1.2 trillion trade deficit was a priority, which led to President Trump declaring a national emergency and imposing tariffs. He expressed confidence that the deal with China would help address this issue.

A complete briefing is expected to be provided soon with further details on the agreement.
