Swansea University has opened a new facility, the Global Lounge, located in Fulton House. This space is designed to foster connections between international and home students through various activities and events.
The Global Lounge offers several programs, including Language Cafés where students can practice languages such as Welsh, French, Spanish, and Chinese. Cultural events will feature performances like Welsh harp music and Indian dance. Social and networking events are also planned to help students build friendships and professional networks. Additionally, a pop-up version of the lounge will be available at the University's Bay Campus.
The concept for the lounge was developed by Andrew Shin, an alumnus who graduated in 1989 with a degree in management science. As an international student from Hong Kong, Mr. Shin valued his time at Swansea University and aims to support future students in forming lasting connections.
Mr. Shin expressed his vision: “Swansea University brings together a lot of different students from around the world, and I believe they all would benefit from a special place, like the Global Lounge.”
The opening event featured live music and cultural showcases. Speakers included Esmaralda Joseph, a graduate of MSc Cognitive Neuroscience originally from South Asia. She emphasized the significance of the lounge for international students: “To me...what the Global Lounge signifies is a celebration of the incredible strength...to think and speak in different languages simultaneously.”
Niamh Lamond, Swansea University Registrar and Chief Operating Officer, acknowledged Mr. Shin's contribution: “Thanks to the incredible generosity and support of Mr Shin...The Global Lounge is more than just a space—it’s a movement towards inclusivity.”
