The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to the Outer Space Treaty and emphasized the significant benefits of satellites, particularly in times of crisis. Speaking at the 64th Session of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space Legal Subcommittee (COPUOS LSC) in Vienna, U.S. Representative Katie King highlighted how satellites have provided crucial services during natural disasters, such as offering cellular service and broadband internet during California's recent wildfires.
King noted that as satellite numbers grow, international cooperation is essential to maximize their benefits while addressing emerging challenges. She emphasized the role small satellites play in enhancing communication in remote areas where traditional infrastructure is lacking.
The statement also addressed concerns regarding financial sanctions. King's delegation clarified that "financial sanctions are a legitimate, important, appropriate, and effective tool for responding to harmful activity and addressing threats to peace and security." The United States applies these measures consistently with international law to promote objectives like rule of law, human rights, accountability for transnational crime, and international security.
The U.S. stance is clear: sanctions aim to encourage positive behavior change and are not inherently unjustified as some narratives suggest.
"Thank you, Chair," concluded King.
