Transportation unions, student groups, merchants, and other workers' unions in Peru have announced a nationwide general strike on May 14, 2025. The strike is a protest against violence and organized crime in the country. Demonstrations are expected to occur in central Lima and other cities across Peru.
The strike is anticipated to significantly impact transportation activities in Lima and Callao. High participation from cab drivers, motorcycle taxi drivers, collective transporters, and informal carriers is expected. Major disruptions are predicted in Gamarra and Unanue starting at 8:00 a.m., with a march to Congress planned for 11:00 a.m.
The U.S. Embassy has advised American citizens to avoid areas of demonstrations and remain alert as protests may spread to other parts of the city. In addition to transportation disruptions, local businesses in some cities might close due to the strike.
Other organizations may join the strike without prior notice. Demonstrations have the potential to escalate into violence, prompting an increased security presence. Citizens are encouraged to monitor local media and Peruvian government sources for updates.
Advice includes avoiding demonstrations or roadblocks, exercising caution near large gatherings or protests, reviewing travel plans, contacting travel companies for assistance, and monitoring local media for updates.
