The 2025 Preparatory Committee for the 2026 NPT Review Conference was held in New York from April 28 to May 9, 2025. The Treaty on the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons, a key element of the nonproliferation regime since its inception in 1970, focuses on disarmament, nonproliferation, and peaceful nuclear energy use. It also supports the International Atomic Energy Agency's authority to ensure compliance by non-nuclear weapon states with their treaty obligations.
During the event, several statements were delivered by U.S. representatives. Deputy Assistant Secretary Gonzalo Suarez presented both the U.S. Closing Statement and specific issue statements for Clusters 2 and 3 at the PrepCom. Jim Warden delivered a statement for Cluster 3 as well.
Acting Permanent Representative to the Conference on Disarmament Alison Storsve addressed Cluster 1 specific issues, while Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary Matthew Sharp provided a general statement for Cluster 1. Senior Bureau Official Paul Watzlavick delivered the U.S. National Statement.
These presentations reflect ongoing efforts to uphold and strengthen international commitments under the treaty framework.
