Lord Spencer Livermore, Financial Secretary to the Treasury and Minister for Growth, recently inaugurated the Ray Dolby Centre in Cambridge. This facility is set to become a pivotal site for physics research and innovation in the UK.

During the opening ceremony, Lord Livermore was joined by several dignitaries, including Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Prentice, Dagmar Dolby, and Head of the Cavendish Laboratory, Professor Mete Atatüre. The event highlighted the Centre's potential impact on both the University of Cambridge and the broader national landscape.

The Ray Dolby Centre will now house the Cavendish Laboratory, recognized globally as a leading institution for physics research. The facility is not only an asset to the University but also serves as a national resource. Its advanced research capabilities will be accessible to academic and industrial researchers across the UK.

The Centre aims to drive advancements in areas such as quantum technologies, semiconductors, disease detection, and sustainable energy. It is a cornerstone of the new Cambridge West Innovation District, which seeks to integrate industry with academia. Once completed, this district is expected to create 14,000 jobs and establish Cambridge as a major hub for AI, quantum research, and climate solutions in Europe.

Prior to the opening ceremony, Lord Livermore toured a proposed site for Cambridge’s Innovation Hub. Supported by Chancellor Rachel Reeves, this project aims to emulate successful models like Boston’s Lab Central and Paris’s Station F by fostering connections between entrepreneurs, investors, and corporate partners.

The Innovation Hub is anticipated to significantly boost Cambridge's startup ecosystem by increasing venture investment and attracting global R&D-focused businesses. This initiative underscores efforts to strengthen the UK's status as a leader in science and innovation.

Additionally, Lord Livermore visited the Cambridge Biomedical Campus where he explored Europe's leading life sciences cluster at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology. Discussions with leaders from Cambridge University Health Partners focused on advancing healthcare innovation and economic growth in the region.
