Special Envoy Ambassador Richard Norland has announced his retirement from the Foreign Service at the end of May. After nearly 45 years in service, including six years as U.S. Ambassador and Special Envoy for Libya, Norland expressed gratitude to various stakeholders.
"After nearly 45 years in the Foreign Service and six years serving first as U.S. Ambassador and then as Special Envoy for Libya, I will be completing my assignment and retiring from the Foreign Service at the end of May," said Norland.
He extended thanks to Libyan officials and citizens he worked with towards a peaceful Libya. "I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all the Libyan officials and private citizens I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and working with across the country in support of a peaceful, united Libya."
Norland also acknowledged his colleagues in the foreign diplomatic community, particularly at UNSMIL, for their collaboration. He appreciated the staff at the Embassy to Libya under Chargé d’Affaires Jeremy Berndt for their professional support.
"The United States will continue to engage with Libyans from east, west and south in support of efforts to unify the country and build a partnership that will make both our countries safer, stronger and more prosperous," he concluded.
