The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has introduced a new program aimed at assisting illegal aliens in voluntarily returning to their home countries. This initiative, facilitated through the CBP Home App, provides financial and travel assistance. Illegal aliens who choose to self-deport using the app will receive a $1,000 stipend once their return is confirmed.
The program offers an alternative to traditional deportation processes by allowing participants to avoid encounters with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). DHS anticipates that this method will reduce deportation costs by approximately 70 percent, with current expenses averaging $17,121 per case.
Secretary Kristi Noem emphasized the benefits of this approach: “If you are here illegally, self-deportation is the best, safest and most cost-effective way to leave the United States to avoid arrest. DHS is now offering illegal aliens financial travel assistance and a stipend to return to their home country through the CBP Home App.” She also highlighted that this option provides significant savings for U.S. taxpayers and ensures safety for law enforcement and individuals involved.
The first successful use of the travel assistance was recorded with an individual returning from Chicago to Honduras. More flights have been scheduled for upcoming weeks as additional participants engage with the program.
Participants who declare their intent to depart via the CBP Home app will be deprioritized for detention and removal prior to their departure if they show progress towards leaving. Moreover, engaging in this self-deportation process may help preserve future opportunities for legal re-entry into the United States.
To participate, eligible individuals must submit their "Intent to Depart" through the CBP Home app. Additional details are available at DHS.gov/CBPhome.
