The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced a new initiative aimed at providing financial and travel assistance to illegal aliens wishing to return to their home countries voluntarily. This program, accessible through the CBP Home App, offers participants a $1,000 stipend once their return is confirmed.

According to DHS, self-deportation is presented as a dignified option for illegal aliens who wish to avoid encounters with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The department estimates that using the CBP Home App could reduce deportation costs by approximately 70%, given that the current average cost for arresting, detaining, and removing an illegal alien stands at $17,121.

The first instance of this travel assistance was recently utilized by an individual returning from Chicago to Honduras. Secretary Kristi Noem emphasized the benefits of this program: “If you are here illegally, self-deportation is the best, safest and most cost-effective way to leave the United States to avoid arrest. DHS is now offering illegal aliens financial travel assistance and a stipend to return to their home country through the CBP Home App.”

Participation in this voluntary self-deportation process via the CBP Home App may also help individuals maintain eligibility for legal re-entry into the United States in the future. Those interested must submit their "Intent to Depart" through the app. More information can be found on DHS.gov/CBPhome.
