Portugal is currently facing a widespread power outage as of April 28, 2025. According to reports, this outage has impacted transportation systems and communication networks across the country, with the exception of the Azores. The situation has led to disruptions in public transportation and traffic light failures. As a result, individuals are urged to limit their movements and prioritize safety.

Authorities have advised the public to exercise caution while traveling due to the disrupted traffic signals and public transport services. Keeping up with local news updates is recommended; RTP, the public television station, and radio stations TSF and Antena 1 are available to provide information where coverage is possible.

The U.S. Embassy in Lisbon has issued guidance for U.S. citizens in Portugal, emphasizing the importance of reserving the emergency number 112 for genuine emergencies only. The embassy remains available for U.S. citizens facing emergencies, with contact information provided as follows: (+351) 21-727-3300 and conslisbon@state.gov. The embassy's website can be accessed at https://pt.usembassy.gov/.

The Department of State has also provided assistance through its consular affairs numbers, 888-407-4747 or 202-501-4444. Additionally, the Department of State encourages enrollment in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for security messages and advises following their updates on Facebook, Twitter, and the travel website travel.state.gov.

U.S. citizens are encouraged to notify their loved ones about their condition if possible and to adhere to instructions from local authorities to ensure safety during this challenging period.
