The U.S. Mission in Greece has issued an alert for U.S. citizens regarding planned demonstrations and a transportation strike scheduled for May 1, 2025, in observance of the Labor Day holiday in Greece. The main demonstration sites in Athens will include Syntagma Square at 10:30 AM, Klafthmonos Square at 11:00 AM, and Korai Square at 11:00 AM. In Thessaloniki, demonstrations are planned at the Statue of Eleftherios Venizelos at 10:30 AM and the Arch of Galerius at 10:30 AM. Additional demonstrations may also occur across Greece on the same day.
U.S. citizens are advised to avoid the areas where demonstrations will occur and exercise caution around large gatherings or crowds. "Some past demonstrations have turned violent and have involved the destruction of property," the alert cautioned. There is also a potential for anti-riot engagements with police, including the possible use of tear gas.
Transportation disruptions and strikes are anticipated throughout Greece on May 1, 2025. Citizens are encouraged to monitor local media as well as websites such as www.apergia.gr for the latest information on demonstrations and strike notifications.
The U.S. Mission provided several actions for citizens to consider, including reviewing travel plans, contacting airlines or travel companies, avoiding demonstration areas, exercising caution if near large gatherings, and keeping a low profile.
