The fifth iteration of the U.S.-Papua New Guinea combined military exercise, Tamiok Strike, concluded successfully on April 25, 2025, at Murray Barracks in Papua New Guinea. The exercise took place over nearly two weeks, from April 14 to April 25, 2025, and was held at various locations including Port Moresby, Lae, and Wewak. It aimed to enhance the operational capabilities and interoperability of the Papua New Guinea Defense Force (PNGDF) and the United States military, supporting a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
The U.S. engages Papua New Guinea and other Pacific neighbors to maintain a free, secure, and prosperous Indo-Pacific. The bilateral Defense Cooperation Agreement, effective since 2023, serves as the foundation of this partnership.
"The United States is committed to sustaining and maintaining our bilateral relationship with Papua New Guinea," stated Defense Attache and Senior Defense Official, Col Isaac Baskins. "Our bilateral relationship contributes to our safety, demonstrates strength, and provides opportunities for prosperity."
More than 200 military personnel participated in the exercise, including members from the U.S. Army, the Wisconsin National Guard, and the PNGDF, with observers from the Australian Defense Force. The exercise focused on joint operational readiness, tactical skill enhancement, and fostering mutual understanding and cooperation.
Key aspects of Tamiok Strike 2025 included Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief drills, Medical and Engineering Civic Action Programs, Field Training Exercises, Staff Exercise Exercises, and the construction of a new bunkhouse in Lae. These efforts aligned to prepare both forces for effective disaster response, support to local communities, and improvement in tactical proficiency.
Major General Lance Okamura, US Army Pacific Deputy Commanding General, officiated the closing ceremony of the exercise at Murray Barracks in Port Moresby.
