Today at the United Nations General Assembly, a tribute was held to honor the memory of Pope Francis. Ambassador Dorothy Shea, Chargé d’Affaires, addressed the assembly, highlighting the Pope's significant contributions to humanity and expressing condolences to the Catholic community worldwide.
"Pope Francis served as a spiritual guide to over one billion Catholics worldwide, including more than 50 million in the United States," Shea noted. She reflected on the Pope's impact during his 2015 visit to the United States, recalling the positive impression he left on many.
Shea emphasized the Pope's dedication to promoting interreligious dialogue, which fostered respect among diverse cultures and faiths. "Pope Francis urged countries to pursue dialogue, reconciliation, and genuine peace," she added, recognizing his efforts in advocating for diplomacy and peace over conflict.
Throughout his papacy, Pope Francis focused on supporting the vulnerable and defending religious freedom. His groundbreaking role as the first pope from the Americas and the Southern Hemisphere was also highlighted.
"Pope Francis inspired people across the globe by reminding them that the Church is 'like a field hospital' for the broken and wounded," Shea stated, underscoring his compassion and leadership. His global travels brought messages of unity, truth, and peace, aligning with the UN's vision.
Closing her remarks, Ambassador Shea reaffirmed the United States' commitment to the principles of freedom of expression and religion, and joined the global community in mourning Pope Francis's passing.
