Sun Life U.S. has expanded its Family Leave Insurance (FLI) program to include three additional states: Arizona, Wyoming, and Pennsylvania. This expansion brings the total number of states with this offering to 14, with more expected to follow later this year. The company's FLI is designed to provide paid family leave for workers, particularly in states lacking government-mandated programs, acting as a valuable benefit option for employers and employees.
Joi Tillman, President of Group Benefits at Sun Life U.S., stated, "While the Family and Medical Leave Act provides unpaid leave up to 12 weeks, many employees have the difficult decision of whether they can afford to take time off to tend to their families. With FLI, employers can choose to offer paid family leave benefits in a structure that aligns with their business and gives their employees a valuable benefit. We believe no one should have to choose between their job and caring for a loved one."
The FLI is structured to benefit all eligible employees, regardless of their state. It is fully insured coverage aimed at helping small and mid-sized employers to provide the benefit without the financial risks associated with self-funding.
Sheila Sokolski, Vice President of Product Strategy and Portfolio Management at Sun Life U.S., commented, "FLI contributes to economic growth by attracting more workers to these regions and supporting the return-to-work process for those who go on leave. FLI also gives employers a powerful tool for talent recruitment and retention, as more professionals seek a robust benefits offering when considering jobs."
The offering will be available for quoting in the newly added states starting May 1, with further expansions anticipated throughout 2025.
