Swansea University and Vodafone have officially reinforced their partnership with a new collaboration agreement, further strengthening the relationship initially formed in November 2023. This partnership is projected to direct substantial benefits towards the Swansea Bay City Region through a £29 million investment.

The collaboration is concentrated on advancing the digital transformation and regional development efforts in the area. It is anticipated to create various opportunities for local businesses, healthcare providers, and the broader community. One aspect of this vision includes a potential arrangement for Vodafone to take the top floor space in Swansea University's Sketty Lane building set to open in 2026. The purpose of this move is to promote cooperation among academia, industry, and local stakeholders with the goal of fostering advancements in health, technology, and enterprise.

As part of their ongoing partnership endeavors, Vodafone and Swansea University are addressing digital exclusion by handing out 3,000 SIM cards to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds in the local community. Additionally, Vodafone has plans to partner with university academics and local health boards on innovative medical research, enhancing the region's standing as a leader in the field.

In another effort, Vodafone aims to strengthen connections with local health boards and small businesses by collaborating with Swansea University's National Network for Innovation in Sport and Health. Through this partnership, Vodafone is looking to open up new avenues for innovation and growth, thereby supporting the region's digital health and business ecosystems.

Professor Keith Lloyd, the Director of the National Network for Innovation in Sport and Health, commented, "Our partnership with Vodafone exemplifies how academia and industry can work together to deliver transformative impact. This collaboration is not only accelerating investment in the Swansea Bay City Region but also creating a vibrant ecosystem that attracts businesses and supports regional development. We are proud to work alongside Vodafone to drive innovation that benefits the community and beyond."

Claire Harris, Head of Small, Medium & Enterprise Business at Vodafone, added, "We are excited to expand our collaboration with Swansea University. Together, we’re not only investing in cutting-edge research and innovation but also in the future of the region. By building strong connections with local health boards, businesses, and the wider community, we aim to make a lasting positive impact on the region’s economic and technology landscape."
