This year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, a significant moment in history. Across the Czech Republic, various commemorations are planned to honor the 1945 events and the sacrifices of those who fought for freedom.
The U.S. Embassy in the Czech Republic will take part in these events, celebrating the allied victory and the role of U.S. forces. The U.S. Third Army, commanded by General George S. Patton, played a crucial role in liberating parts of western and southern Bohemia. Numerous American airmen were lost while targeting Nazi military and industrial sites. The embassy staff will also honor Czech soldiers and resistance fighters.
On April 25, 2025, the Convoy of Liberty will arrive at the U.S. Embassy in Prague at 10:00 a.m. This event features historic military vehicles and motorcycles, organized with the Third Army Club Plzeň. The Czech Army Central Band will perform, and remarks will be delivered by U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Christy Agor. The convoy will then travel to Plzeň to continue commemoration efforts.
The American Center will host the accompanying program "Step Back in Time," beginning at 11:00 a.m., organized by the U.S. Embassy's Youth Council. The event includes talks by historians Michal Plavec and Daniel Švec, a discussion, and a virtual reality simulation.
After the Prague events, the convoy will journey to western and southern Bohemia to pay tribute to American troops who liberated these areas 80 years ago. A highlight will be Plzeň’s Liberation Festival. More information is available on their website.
