Sun Life U.S. announced the renewal of its support for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) through a $50,000 donation to the Hearts + Minds (H+M) program. This initiative, which promotes managing physical and mental wellness, aligns with Sun Life's focus on comprehensive care. Sun Life, a supporter of the program since 2022, is dedicated to widening access to care and providing health services to communities in need.

"We are grateful for support from Sun Life, as they are ardent supporters of programs that educate communities and help people access care," said Jessica Edwards, chief development officer at NAMI. "The H+M program is a valuable resource, and we are pleased to be able to expand its reach to more people."

The H+M program, aimed at educating individuals on the link between mental and physical health, has shown positive outcomes. A 2024 survey indicated that 80% of participants reported increased knowledge of healthy behaviors. NAMI affiliates and state groups around the U.S. are implementing the program.

"We must eliminate lingering prejudices and stigma, and ensure every person has universal access to mental health support services, whether in a clinical or community setting," stated Dr. Katie Connell, director of Behavioral Health at Sun Life U.S. "Mental health can impact physical health, just as physical conditions, especially chronic ones, can often lead to poor mental health. It's important that every person understands the connection and has access to the services they need."

Dr. Connell added, "Community organizations that empower people to take control of their own health are filling critical gaps in the healthcare ecosystem. The great work by NAMI and others is driving real change by providing people with the knowledge they need to help them achieve overall health and wellness."

Apart from supporting NAMI, Sun Life also contributes to Hartford Behavioral Health through the Strikeout for a Cause campaign in collaboration with the Hartford Yard Goats baseball team. Additionally, Sun Life advocates for mental health parity in long-term disability insurance and supports federal legislation promoting its adoption.
