Secretary of State Marco Rubio addressed the press regarding the conflict in Ukraine, emphasizing that it is not the United States’ war, despite the nation's involvement in facilitating support and seeking a resolution. Rubio explained that the President has engaged in extensive efforts over the past 87 days to help bring an end to the conflict.
"We are now reaching a point where we need to decide and determine whether this is even possible or not," Rubio said. The State Department has reportedly presented a framework to Ukrainians, European officials, and Russians, though specifics were not disclosed. General Kellogg, Ambassador Witkoff, and others continue to meet with Putin and Ukrainian representatives to negotiate potential peace terms.
Ongoing discussions with European nations and Ukraine have focused on security guarantees. "Ukraine will have a right to defend itself," Rubio affirmed, echoing the sentiment that every country has the right to self-defense. If peace discussions fail to progress, the administration will shift focus to other priorities.
In conversations with European partners, topics such as sanctions and security were addressed. Rubio acknowledged that European involvement is crucial, stating, "This is happening on the continent of Europe, and so obviously European powers will care deeply about what happens."
Speaking on preventing further conflict, Rubio stressed, "We're talking about avoiding thousands and thousands of people from dying over the next year."
International diplomacy efforts also extend to Iran, where nuclear negotiations are ongoing. Rubio conveyed the administration’s stance: "The President’s made clear Iran will not have a nuclear weapon." European partners are facing decisions regarding the reimposition of sanctions in response to Iran's nuclear activities. The international community anticipates a report from the International Atomic Energy Agency that could trigger further diplomatic actions.
The United States remains committed to pursuing peaceful resolutions across these complex and interconnected international issues.
