Senior Bureau Official Sean O'Neill traveled to Vietnam from April 16 to 20 as part of a commemoration marking the 30th anniversary of the establishment of U.S.-Vietnam relations.
In Hanoi, O'Neill met with Vietnamese officials to discuss various topics under the U.S.-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP). These topics included enhancing economic cooperation and addressing trade imbalances. Discussions also focused on regional and global challenges to peace, prosperity, and security. Emphasis was placed on resolving disputes peacefully, adhering to international law, and respecting the freedoms of navigation and overflight, particularly in the South China Sea.
During the visit, O'Neill and Vietnamese counterparts also addressed issues related to illegal immigration, trafficking in persons, cyberscam operations, and other transnational crimes impacting both Americans, Vietnamese, and the broader region.
Additionally, O'Neill observed dioxin remediation work at Bien Hoa Air Base, a collaborative project between the United States and Vietnam that underscores the strong bilateral cooperation to address the legacies of war.
