As a mark of respect, President Donald J. Trump has declared that flags in the United States will be flown at half-staff in honor of Pope Francis. This order applies to the White House, all public buildings and grounds, military posts, naval stations, and vessels of the federal government across the District of Columbia and nationwide, including U.S. territories and possessions.
The President stated that the flags would remain in this position until sunset on the day of Pope Francis’ interment. Additionally, this order is to be observed at all U.S. embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including military facilities and naval vessels and stations.
The proclamation was issued on April 21, 2025, under the authority guaranteed to the President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States. President Trump signed the document in the year marking the 249th anniversary of the Independence of the United States.
"IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-first day of April, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-five, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-ninth." explained President Trump.
