The United States has announced the implementation of visa restrictions affecting over 250 officials of the Nicaraguan regime, led by Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo. This move brings the total number of officials affected by U.S. visa restrictions to over 2,000. These actions are a response to what the United States government describes as the regime's deprivation of fundamental freedoms for the Nicaraguan people and the forced exile of many.
As the seven-year mark approaches since the regime's severe actions against protestors, U.S. officials are acknowledging the bravery of those who protested for a Nicaragua free from oppressive rule. The government asserts that it "will not stand for Ortega and Murillo’s continued assault on Nicaragua."
The recent visa restrictions are enforced under Presidential Proclamation 10309. This proclamation suspends entry into the United States for members of the Government of Nicaragua and others involved in policies or actions that damage democratic institutions.
