Richard M. Mills, Jr. U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria | U.S. Embassy and Consulate in Nigeria

Good evening, distinguished guests, artists, and friends. We are gathered to celebrate the 17th annual Headies Music Awards. The event is a part of the pre-awards celebration, recognizing significant contributions to the music industry.

Ambassador Richard Mills gave his appreciation to Ayo, the founder of the Headies Awards, and his team for organizing the event. He noted the presence of several esteemed guests, including federal and state representatives, members of the diplomatic corps, and the Headies Awards nominees. Mills highlighted the opportunity for his wife, Leigh, to experience Nigeria's vibrant culture.

Additionally, Mills welcomed U.S. companies partnering with Nigeria’s music industry and alumni of U.S. government exchange programs. He expressed pride in the cultural ties between the U.S. and Nigeria, as evidenced by rising recognition of Nigerian artists at U.S. venues and award shows, such as the Grammy Awards.

Mills emphasized the significance of the Headies Awards, noting their relocation to the United States in recent years, specifically to Atlanta. This move symbolized recognition of the impact African music has made in the United States. He highlighted the role of Georgia, California, and New York in supporting U.S. creative partnerships with Nigeria.

Mills stressed the importance of the creative industries in sharing culture and growing economies. He mentioned the U.S. government’s flagship music exchange program, American Music Abroad and introduced the American Music Mentorship Program. This initiative, in partnership with the Recording Academy, provides African musicians with opportunities to engage with the U.S. music scene. In its inaugural year, three Nigerian creatives traveled to the U.S., leading to a direct result: a Nigerian was selected to open a regional office in Nigeria for a U.S. media group.

In conclusion, Ambassador Mills expressed excitement for future musical collaborations between Nigerians and Americans and encouraged attendees to continue exploring creativity and networks. He congratulated all nominees and wished them an enjoyable evening.
