U.S. Ambassador to Mongolia Richard L. Buangan, along with a delegation from the U.S. Embassy, visited the westernmost provinces of Mongolia—Khovd, Bayan-Ulgii, and Uvs—in late March. The aim of the trip was to engage with local government officials, business owners, border protection officers, and American citizens in the area.
Ambassador Buangan’s visit focused on strengthening security cooperation and enhancing government and business ties between the U.S. and Mongolia. "It was encouraging to see the positive influence U.S. investment and programs have had in this region," Ambassador Buangan stated. He noted the eagerness of Mongolians to collaborate with American companies and institutions, acknowledging how such partnerships could boost Mongolia's economic growth.
The ambassador toured the American Corner in Ulaangom, the capital of Uvs province, where local youth study English and learn about American culture. He thanked local leaders for their commitment to expanding resources for English programs and stressed the significance of educational pursuits in the United States for young Mongolians.
Meetings with Mongolian border and customs officials highlighted the positive impact of U.S. Government-provided equipment in intercepting illicit drugs and radioactive materials. This equipment aids in keeping harmful items out of Mongolia and preventing further transit.
During the trip, Embassy representatives also discussed enhancing professional capacity and attracting U.S. private investment with local government officials. Small business owners benefiting from U.S. government entrepreneurship loans were also visited, emphasizing potential for U.S. businesses in Mongolia's tourism sector.
The visit included consular meetings for American citizens in the region and participation in the Nauruz celebrations with the Kazakh community in Bayan-Ulgii.
