The U.S. National Day celebration in Djibouti included remarks from Ambassador Jonathan Pratt, highlighting the strong partnership between the United States and Djibouti. Ambassador Pratt addressed distinguished guests, including Dr. Hibo Moumin Assoweh, Djibouti's Minister of Youth and Culture, and emphasized the significance of the U.S. Independence Day.
"We have learned that in Djibouti's summer heat, an early celebration ensures that we can all gather in comfort to mark this important occasion," explained Ambassador Pratt. Even though the actual Independence Day is on July 4th, the early celebration allows for a more comfortable gathering due to the climate.
Ambassador Pratt noted the historical significance of the Declaration of Independence, stating, "It marks the historic date in 1776 when the Declaration of Independence was approved by the Continental Congress, proclaiming that our thirteen colonies should become 'free and independent states.'"
The celebrations were not just about American history. Ambassador Pratt took the opportunity to celebrate the "strong and growing partnership between the United States and Djibouti," emphasizing shared commitments to a secure and prosperous future. He praised Djibouti's role in regional stability, including hosting U.S. forces and working with international partners.
Acknowledging the importance of economic growth, Ambassador Pratt highlighted the United States' commitment to strengthening trade and investment with Djibouti. "We encourage American companies to engage in key sectors like logistics, energy, and technology," he said.
He also focused on supporting the youth of Djibouti, announcing the opening of a new American Corner at the National Library in Balbala. This initiative aims to provide educational resources, technology access, and programs focused on English language acquisition and leadership.
Ambassador Pratt expressed appreciation for Djibouti's hospitality and the connections formed during his six-month tenure in the country. "I have admired its magnificent landscapes...but what has struck me most is the hospitality and kindness of the Djiboutians," he said.
The event was supported by numerous sponsors, including Best Western Hotel and Sheraton. Ambassador Pratt thanked the U.S. Embassy team, particularly Amy, Kadi, and Mackenzie, for organizing the event.
