The embassies of France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, the United Kingdom, and the United States, alongside the Delegation of the European Union, have expressed continuing concern about the situation in South Sudan. This joint statement addresses the ongoing politically motivated violence, repeated violations of the ceasefire, and the lack of visible efforts by the transitional government to ensure peace in the region.
The statement calls for the release of political detainees to facilitate the immediate resumption of direct dialogue among all parties' leaders, including President Kiir and First Vice President Machar. It emphasizes the urgency of rescheduling the postponed 40th session of the Revitalized Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC) to address the critical challenges for achieving peace.
Furthermore, the embassies and the Delegation advocate against unilateral actions that could undermine the 2018 peace agreement. The statement concludes by urging the leaders of South Sudan to fulfill their obligations and prioritize peace.
