The U.S. Embassy in Nassau has issued a security alert, informing U.S. citizens about the risks associated with renting jet skis in The Bahamas, particularly on Nassau and Paradise Island beaches. It comes after several disturbing incidents involving U.S. citizens.

Recent reports have highlighted grave concerns. "Nassau jet ski operators have raped and sexually assaulted U.S. citizen women," according to the embassy. In the last month alone, two U.S. citizen women reported rapes, which contributes to the total of three reported in 2024. Additional assaults on U.S. citizens continue to occur.

Victims have recounted being picked up by male jet ski operators from downtown Nassau and Paradise Island, particularly from areas like Junkanoo Beach, Saunders Beach, and Cabbage Beach. They were then allegedly assaulted on isolated islands in proximity to New Providence.

The security risks are not limited to sexual assaults. "Since August 2024, 4 U.S. citizens were hospitalized with injuries from jet ski accidents," the alert reads. Two of the incidents were severe enough to necessitate emergency evacuations to the U.S.

In response to these issues, the U.S. government has imposed restrictions on its employees, "U.S. government employees working in The Bahamas are prohibited from renting and using jet skis on New Providence and Paradise islands."

For general safety, U.S. citizens are advised to avoid renting jet skis in The Bahamas, be vigilant about their surroundings, remain alert in public restrooms near Nassau beaches, and consistently monitor local weather and marine alerts.

For emergencies or further assistance, citizens can contact the U.S. Embassy in Nassau at +1-242-322-1181 or refer to their official website. The State Department’s Consular Affairs can also be reached for help. Additionally, U.S. citizens are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security updates.

Details and updates about the advisory and other travel recommendations can be found following the U.S. Embassy and the State Department on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter).
