Consumer confidence experienced a decline last week, falling by 1.6 points to reach 85.1, according to the latest data. The four-week moving average also saw a slight drop, decreasing by 0.2 points to 86.6.

Weekly inflation expectations increased by 0.2 percentage points to reach 4.9%, though the four-week moving average showed a minor decline, dropping by 0.1 points to 4.8%.

In terms of financial conditions, those related to the current year decreased by 0.7 points. Future financial conditions, which look ahead to the next 12 months, saw a more significant drop of 5.6 points.

Short-term economic confidence, which covers the next year, diminished by 2.0 points, while medium-term economic confidence, spanning the next five years, rose by the same margin. The subindex regarding the 'time to buy a major household item' decreased by 2.1 points.

ANZ Economist Sophia Angala remarked, "ANZ-Roy Morgan Australian Consumer Confidence declined 1.6 points last week to 85.1 points, the lowest point in the year, so far. The four-week moving average has remained within the tight 86.0-86.9 points range since the beginning of January."

Angala noted the primary cause of the decline was a decrease in households’ confidence in their personal finances: "This week’s decline in the series was largely due to a fall in households’ confidence in their personal finances. Both financial conditions subindices fell to a 2025 low, as confidence in the financial outlook over the next year recorded its largest weekly decline since June 2024."

She added, "Meanwhile, households’ confidence in the short- and long-term economic outlook are still above their H2 2024 averages and in the year so far."
