The Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI) is the prominent program of the U.S. Department of State aimed at nurturing emerging entrepreneurs and business leaders from the Western Hemisphere. This initiative, funded entirely by the U.S. Government and implemented by IREX, spans four weeks and provides fellows with opportunities to develop leadership and entrepreneurship skills through practical experience, online courses, and collaborations in the United States. The U.S. Government's support includes leadership curriculum courses, mentoring, round-trip travel, and a stipend for meals and housing during the program.
The YLAI fellowship encourages the development of professional networks to promote a prosperous Western Hemisphere. It annually invites 250 entrepreneurs from 37 countries and offers an outbound fellowship for up to 70 U.S. participants. Additionally, it maintains a digital network with over 60,000 members.
Applications for the 2026 YLAI Fellowship Program will be accepted from April 10 to May 15, 2025. Participants will engage in a virtual kickoff and complete an Entrepreneurial Leadership Curriculum before traveling to the United States for an Opening Orientation, followed by a four-week professional placement and concluding with a Closing Forum in Washington, D.C.
Candidates must meet several eligibility criteria, including being between 25 and 35 years old as of January 1, 2026, and having at least two years of experience growing a business or social venture in the regions specified. They must also be able to obtain a U.S. J-1 visa and be proficient in English.
Applications not meeting eligibility criteria will not proceed to the Selection Committee's review. Selected semifinalists will undergo interviews in July 2025, and notifications will be sent by the end of August 2025. The selection committee evaluates candidates' entrepreneurial experience, alignment with program objectives, and leadership qualities.
