The governments of the United States, Australia, India, and Japan have issued a joint statement in response to the recent earthquake in Myanmar. "We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to the peoples of Myanmar and Thailand following the earthquake that struck central Myanmar on March 28, 2025."
The earthquake resulted in significant fatalities, injuries, and destruction of infrastructure, exacerbating existing humanitarian challenges in Myanmar. The Quad partners have welcomed commitments to ceasefires, urging all parties to implement, extend, and broaden these measures. This is to ensure the safe delivery of urgent humanitarian aid. They also acknowledge the support from ASEAN, reflecting on ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ statements made on March 29 and 30.
The Quad partners have collectively committed over USD 20 million in humanitarian aid, delivering relief supplies, deploying emergency medical teams, and supporting organizations on the ground in Myanmar. Coordination within the Quad's Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Partnership aims to ensure that aid distribution meets the needs of affected communities efficiently.
The Quad's cooperative humanitarian efforts have roots in their response to the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. They remain committed to aiding in natural disasters and addressing broader regional stability and security challenges, in line with their goal of a free and open Indo-Pacific.
