KfW IPEX-Bank has announced a EUR 35 million financing venture with Finnish shipping company Langh Ship for two new eco-friendly container feeder vessels. These 1,200 TEU-capacity vessels are designed with a focus on sustainability and fuel economy.
The ships will be powered by MAN's two-stroke, slow-speed main engines, aiming to optimize fuel efficiency. Langh Ship's sister company, Langh Tech, will supply several environmentally conscious technologies for the ships, including hybrid scrubbers and a Ballast Water Management System (BWMS).
A prominent feature of these vessels is their exhaust gas cleaning system, which is set up for an Onboard Carbon Capture System. Developed by Langh Tech, this system captures up to 50 percent of CO2 emissions from the exhaust, chemically transforming them into sodium carbonate. This sodium carbonate can then be used in various industrial applications, promoting a circular economy and aiding in the maritime sector's decarbonization efforts.
Andreas Ufer, a member of the Management Board of KfW IPEX-Bank, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, "We are very glad to have won Langh Ship as a new customer. With this financing we underline our commitment to support innovative vessels that advance the decarbonisation in the European maritime sector."
Once completed, the ships will be chartered to Borchard Lines, a UK-based ocean transport company.
