The UK box office is experiencing a notable rebound according to the Barclays Consumer Spend report. This resurgence is attributed to blockbuster movies like "Wicked," "Gladiator II," and "Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy," which have contributed to a 25.9% increase in cinema spending over the last four months, compared to the same period last year.

Rich Robinson, Head of Hospitality & Leisure at Barclays, commented on the situation, noting that cinemas are intensifying efforts to enhance the movie-going experience. “Competition for consumer leisure time has never been fiercer. Cinemas are adapting by making the experience of going to see a film more enjoyable, such as by installing sofas and reclining seats, and improving food and drinks menus – even offering in-seat service," he said.

During November 2024 to February 2025, cinema spending marked significant growth, with a peak increase of 52.1% in December. This increase overshadowed the growth in Digital Content & Subscriptions. The demand for streaming services and entertainment overall also saw growth, albeit at a slower rate than cinemas, with streaming up 13.2% in 2024.

Additionally, February, typically marked by less spending, saw a 9.0% rise in cinema expenditure, spurred by the release of "Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy" following Valentine’s Day.

Robinson expressed optimism about the future, stating, "With new and enhanced locations, an exciting 2025 release schedule, and a revived public appetite, I’m hopeful that cinema takings will exceed last year’s total, and that we will see the return of the billion-pound UK box office."

Despite these gains, early year sluggishness was noted as major film releases were delayed due to Hollywood labor disputes, later resulting in a concentration of big launches. The competition for viewer attention remains intense, yet cinemas appear to be regaining their foothold.
