Countries worldwide are facing the challenge of balancing rapid digital transformation with sustainable energy use. Among them, Mozambique and Madagascar are striving to enhance their digital infrastructure while ensuring energy efficiency and climate resilience.
Korea serves as a model in this regard, having successfully harmonized digital growth with sustainability through advanced policies, AI-driven energy solutions, and smart grid technologies. In November 2024, delegations from Mozambique and Madagascar visited Korea to study these innovations for possible implementation in their home countries.
The two delegations participated in the Korean Green Growth Innovation Days (KGID). They shared insights from several World Bank projects aimed at improving digital infrastructure and energy access. Notable projects include Mozambique's Sustainable Energy and Broadband Access in Rural Areas Project and Digital Acceleration Project, as well as Madagascar’s Digital and Energy Connectivity for Inclusion.
During the visit, they met with Korean institutions such as the National Information Society Agency and the Korea Electric Power Corporation. These meetings provided exposure to AI-powered energy management solutions capable of reducing data center power consumption by 30%. Such solutions offer scalable models for Mozambique and Madagascar as they develop their digital ecosystems.
The visit highlighted the importance of combining digital inclusion with energy efficiency. Korea’s Green Button Platform, allowing consumers to monitor and reduce their carbon footprint, demonstrated the potential of data-driven energy solutions. Additionally, the role of digital literacy via Korea’s Information Access Centers—already established in both Mozambique and Madagascar—was emphasized to ensure equitable access to technology.
Both Mozambique and Madagascar are now considering the implementation of AI-driven energy management, development of stronger policy frameworks inspired by Korean green digital initiatives, and conducting feasibility studies for new Information Access Centers.
With insights from Korea and support from the Korea Digital Development program, Mozambique and Madagascar are poised to enhance their digital infrastructure while pursuing sustainable energy solutions.
