KfW has initiated a significant step in the development of Germany's hydrogen infrastructure by transferring EUR 172 million into an amortisation account. This payment is part of a larger loan totaling EUR 24 billion, which aims to finance the construction of a hydrogen core network across the country. The funds will be managed by H2 Amortisationskonto GmbH and distributed to 18 operators involved in this expansive project.

The initiative represents progress towards establishing a sustainable hydrogen infrastructure, which is seen as essential for promoting hydrogen as an energy carrier. KfW's involvement is on behalf of the German Federal Government and includes both converting existing gas pipelines and constructing new hydrogen pipelines. The plan envisions creating 9,040 kilometers of infrastructure by the year 2032.

Further insights into this financing effort can be accessed through KfW's position paper titled “Managing the transition, strengthening growth.” The document provides an analysis of Germany’s current economic state and outlines recommendations for future action across five policy areas.
