The United States expressed gratitude to the members of the General Assembly for their participation in discussions on the Kimberley Process resolution. Special thanks were extended to the UAE for facilitating these efforts.
In a statement, the U.S. called for reforms within the Kimberley Process to ensure its continued relevance as changes occur in the diamond supply chain. The focus is on broadening the current definition of conflict diamonds, which is currently limited to "rebel groups." The U.S. believes this definition does not adequately address all entities that exploit diamonds to further conflicts.
Furthermore, the U.S. clarified its position on global governance initiatives, stating that "the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals advance a program of soft global governance that is inconsistent with U.S. sovereignty and adverse to the rights and interests of Americans." Consequently, it will no longer support these initiatives.
Due to opposition to the SDGs, the United States announced its dissociation from specific paragraphs—PP5, PP12, OP10, and OP16—that mention either the SDGs or Agenda 2030.
