The World Bank Board of Directors has approved a $53.6 million financing package to improve digital infrastructure, expand broadband access, increase energy efficiency, and modernize public services in Sergipe, Brazil. This initiative is part of the "Sergipe Efficient Digital Acceleration Project," which aims to enhance connectivity, improve digital public services, and ensure sustainable energy solutions for digital transformation.
The project will address significant challenges faced by Sergipe in terms of digital inclusion. The state currently has some of the lowest broadband access rates in Brazil and outdated data infrastructure. Energy systems in public buildings are also inefficient. The project intends to bridge these gaps by improving connectivity for schools, hospitals, and public institutions while providing digital services to underserved populations. It will also focus on strengthening cybersecurity and data protection and implementing energy-efficient measures.
"The World Bank is proud to support Sergipe’s digital transformation efforts," stated Johannes Zutt, World Bank Country Director for Brazil. "This project will help bridge the digital divide, enhance access to essential services, and promote sustainable digital infrastructure for the future while also improving the energy performance of public buildings and reducing energy costs."
Key highlights of the project include upgrading digital infrastructure by expanding high-capacity broadband networks to unserved areas, connecting schools and healthcare centers; modernizing public services through a new digital government platform; installing efficient power systems to support reduced energy costs; and offering training programs to enhance digital literacy among youth, women, and marginalized communities.
This initiative aligns with Brazil's broader strategies for digital transformation and sustainability, promoting inclusive development and creating economic opportunities.
