The World Bank Board of Directors has sanctioned a project to aid the expansion of São Paulo’s Metro Line 2 – Green. The initiative, valued at $250 million, aims to bolster low-carbon mobility, enhance job accessibility, and back social housing in Brazil's densely populated regions. This Green and Resilient SP Metro Line 2 Extension project will deliver safe and sustainable public transport for millions in the São Paulo Metropolitan Region.
São Paulo contends with significant congestion and mobility issues due to its reliance on private vehicles, leading to air pollution and extended commute times. The planned extension of Line 2 spans 8.4 kilometers and is set to improve access for low-income communities, easing pressure on crowded transit lines and lessening road transport dependence. It is expected to notably boost connectivity between São Paulo’s eastern and western areas, aiding residents with lengthy commutes for jobs and essential services.
"Investing in sustainable mobility is key to reducing inequality and improving quality of life in megacities like São Paulo," stated Johannes Zutt, World Bank Country Director for Brazil. "This project will enhance access to economic opportunities while promoting low-carbon transport solutions that support climate resilience."
Project highlights include sustainable public transport improvements through expanded metro service access for underserved areas, investments in energy-efficient systems like driverless operations and regenerative braking technology to lower emissions, exploration of a potential PPP for developing social housing near the metro line offering affordable living options with better transit access, and measures aimed at strengthening gender-reporting channels along with responsive protocols for sexual harassment in mass transit.
This funding aligns with São Paulo’s Integrated Urban Transport Masterplan (PITU 2040) as well as the World Bank’s sustainable mobility goals, ensuring long-term environmental and economic benefits.
