The United States has announced a new visa restriction policy targeting foreign government officials involved in the forced return of Uyghurs and other ethnic or religious groups to China. Secretary of State Marco Rubio revealed the policy, which applies to current or former officials responsible for such actions.
"We are committed to combating China’s efforts to pressure governments to forcibly return Uyghurs and other groups to China, where they are subject to torture and enforced disappearances," said Rubio.
The policy is being enacted immediately, with visa restrictions imposed on Thai government officials linked to the forced return of 40 Uyghurs from Thailand on February 27. This move underscores the U.S.'s stance against China's treatment of Uyghurs.
"In light of China’s longstanding acts of genocide and crimes against humanity committed against Uyghurs, we call on governments around the world not to forcibly return Uyghurs and other groups to China," added Rubio.
The visa restriction falls under Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act. It allows for action against those complicit in returning individuals with protection concerns back to China. Family members may also face restrictions under this policy.
