Canada has filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) regarding the United States' recent imposition of duties on steel and aluminium products. The Canadian government argues that these measures, which ended Canada's exemption from additional duties on certain steel and aluminium products and increased duties on aluminium articles effective March 12, violate US obligations under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) 1994.

This action by Canada initiates a formal request for consultations within the WTO framework. Consultations are designed to provide both parties an opportunity to discuss the issue and seek a resolution without moving forward to litigation. If no resolution is reached within 60 days, Canada may request adjudication by a panel.

Further details about this dispute can be found in document WT/DS635/1.
