The United States has expressed gratitude to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and co-facilitators Cabo Verde and Costa Rica, along with all delegations and civil society partners, for their contributions in formulating the Political Declaration by the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). Despite not being a CSW member this year, the U.S. engaged in negotiations, emphasizing its commitment to protecting women and girls and promoting their empowerment.
The declaration emphasizes respecting and promoting human rights for all women and girls. The Trump Administration's stance is clear: “will defend women’s rights and protect freedom of conscience by using clear and accurate language and policies that recognize women are biologically female, and men are biologically male.” Additionally, there is appreciation for addressing violence against women and girls. The administration stresses curbing mass migration as part of protecting women from violence on migratory routes.
However, certain aspects prevent U.S. support for the declaration. There is a focus on using language that acknowledges biological realities concerning sex. Disappointment was expressed over the lack of precise terminology regarding women's needs. The U.S. also notes it is not party to CEDAW, interpreting related references as relevant only to States Parties.
Concerns were raised about paragraph 15(j), highlighting issues with government censorship under pretexts like combatting misinformation. The administration insists such censorship infringes on free speech rights.
The inclusion of "right to development" was criticized due to its lack of international consensus as a recognized right. Furthermore, reaffirmation of the 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) was contested due to perceived conflicts with U.S. sovereignty.
In terms of equal pay, the U.S. supports pay equality based on "equal pay for equal work," rejecting quotas or targets based on sex for participation in public affairs.
Lastly, the United States does not support including climate change references in this declaration.
