The United States, represented by Chargé d’Affaires Howard Solomon, has emphasized the critical need for the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) to address the pressing issue of synthetic drugs. Speaking at the 68th session in Vienna, Austria, Solomon highlighted that synthetic drugs pose significant security threats that demand immediate action.

"Synthetic drugs present significant security threats that require immediate responses," Solomon stated. He stressed the necessity of political will to progress and substantially reduce the trade in these substances.

In evaluating proposals with resource implications, the U.S. will consider three main criteria: promoting a transparent and accountable UN system; reflecting cost savings and efficiencies; and aligning with national interests to enhance America's safety, strength, and prosperity.

Solomon acknowledged ongoing challenges, particularly concerning the global spread of synthetic drugs. "We recognize that we still face many challenges, particularly on the global proliferation of synthetic drugs," he noted. He urged countries to bolster their national efforts to tackle all aspects of the world drug problem.

The CND's role is seen as vital not only in addressing synthetic drug threats but also in tackling broader issues related to global drug problems.
