UN emphasizes cooperation with EU at Security Council briefing

The United Nations Security Council recently held a briefing on cooperation between the UN and the European Union. The meeting was attended by High Representative Kaja Kallas, who provided insights into this collaboration.

A representative from the United States emphasized the importance of close cooperation between the UN and regional organizations to uphold the principles of the UN Charter. The US representative stated, "For the United Nations to accomplish its primary mission of promoting peace and stability, close cooperation between the UN, and regional and subregional organizations to uphold the principles of the UN Charter is essential."

The shared values and common history linking Europe and the United States were highlighted. These include democracy, freedom of expression, rule of law, religious freedom, respect for individual rights, liberties, and economic opportunity. "The United States stands firmly behind these universal principles," they said.

The EU's role in international peace and security was underscored as vital both within Europe and globally. The US representative pointed out that "the EU plays an important role in international peace and security." Specific examples were cited such as EUFOR’s Operation Althea in Bosnia and Herzegovina which supports sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Additionally, support for regional peace through initiatives like Kosovo's Rule of Law Mission was acknowledged along with efforts towards Serbia’s normalization for regional stability. In Libya, Operation IRINI contributes to implementing a UN arms embargo as per Security Council Resolution 2292.

On counterterrorism efforts, it was noted that terrorism remains one of the most serious threats to international peace. The US appreciates its partnership with the EU in enhancing effectiveness within this area: "The United States appreciates its partnership with the EU on counterterrorism efforts."

Attention also turned towards Europe's current security challenge – Russia-Ukraine war. A recent resolution calling for an end to this conflict was mentioned: "Fifteen days ago...calling for an end to war." There is an expectation for Europe alongside EU support towards achieving durable peace.

Furthermore recognition was given towards European countries’ role in welcoming Ukrainian refugees while contributing significantly toward Ukraine’s reconstruction post-war.

In conclusion remarks focused on encouraging ongoing partnerships among regional organizations upholding UN Charter principles thereby amplifying outcomes effectively: "We encourage all Council members...to promote peace."
