Vitor Gaspar, the Director of the Fiscal Affairs Department at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), has announced his intention to retire in November 2025. Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the IMF, made this announcement.

“Vitor has worked to build up the institution’s expertise in all areas of public finance, including tax policy, revenue administration, expenditure policy, and public finance management,” said Ms. Georgieva. She highlighted his contributions to implementing sound policies and advocating for vulnerable populations.

Mr. Gaspar joined the IMF in 2014 as head of the Fiscal Affairs Department (FAD). Over his tenure, he enhanced the department's reputation as a leader in fiscal policy research and development. In 2015, he initiated the Richard Goode Lecture to encourage dialogue among top researchers in fiscal policy.

During his leadership, FAD played a key role in responding to COVID-19 challenges and advising member countries on fiscal matters related to structural transitions. Mr. Gaspar also established groups within FAD to support these efforts.

“Vitor has been a mentor to many colleagues across the Fund and has fostered a strong corporate service culture within FAD,” Ms. Georgieva stated. She expressed gratitude for Mr. Gaspar's transparent sharing of analyses and innovative approaches that have supported IMF members.
